Cleveland winter days starting to take a toll….

Head toward University Circle and take advantage of the always free, always beautiful Rockefeller Greenhouse….

Though the exterior grounds are still barren, and few interior plants are yet in bloom, exploration of the grounds will still allow for some amazing traditional and non-traditional snapshots….

The Frozen Lighthouse of 2010: A Story…

*Full Disclaimer… archives indicate that this phenomenon happened on a Wednesday……I recall it happening on a Saturday….

I remember it like yesterday… I had awoken on a Saturday morning and turned on the news. There it was…. glistening in the sunlight… an ice covered lighthouse…

I was awestruck… where.. where.. was this amazing masterpiece at.. Iceland perhaps….how long would it take me to get to Iceland… could I get there before it melted…. which of my friends could afford to go there with me……  I had to see this in the flesh…..

And that’s when it happened… the anchor broadcasting the story said magical little words…. “A frozen lighthouse in Cleveland”.…….

"In Cleveland" I said aloud…. "No way"…… Is this once in a lifetime phenomenon really in my backyard….could I really have unknowingly awoken to what would become the best day of my life….

I flipped open my computer, did some Googling and quickly confirmed that this beauty was indeed mere miles away….  I immediately thought to myself……”Photojournalists covering national media are not going to be the only ones risking their lives to get these shots”….

"Nick, Nick….. get up right now" I screamed as I ran down our 3 foot hallway… "There is a completely frozen over lighthouse on the Shoreway… we have to go see it right now"

"You gotta be Kidding me" he said.. groggily awakening from what was a peaceful slumber.

"No, you have to get up now" I said. "I thought it was in Iceland…… we have to get photos so I can add them to my "World’s Largest and other Oddities" Facebook album…"

Begrudgingly, and very slowly (Snail) he obliged…

As I sat fully bundled in ski gear on my living room couch, painstakingly awaiting Nick to emerge…I was overcome with anticipation and a layer of sweat……

Finally, after nearly 20 minutes of couch sitting and 10 minutes of driving, we were there….We opened up our car doors and against our better judgement trekked forward against the massive wind storm….Like pioneers on an exploration we braved the cold….ignored all the warning signs… climbed that ice covered break-wall and captured magic in the making…

The images you see here is the evidence of our journey…

*Full Disclaimer…. Nick definitely took these photos… but I like to consider myself the photo director…

Somebody’s probably pretty happy he got out of bed that day….
